Baby and heat: how to get your child to sleep well when it's hot?

By Customer Service AT4

The heatwave is here, and with it, a question that many parents are asking themselves: How can I help my baby sleep well when temperatures soar? Restless nights, frequent awakenings, night sweats… the heat disrupts the sleep of toddlers even more than that of adults.
Discover our practical tips… and some ideas to make your child’s furniture a real ally in the fight against the heat.

Why do babies suffer more from the heat?

Infants and young children still have difficulty regulating their body temperature. Unlike adults, they don't sweat effectively and depend on their environment to maintain a comfortable temperature. The ideal temperature in a baby's room is between 18 and 20°C , according to recommendations from the French National Health Insurance . This is a very difficult goal to achieve in summer, and even more so in the current climate.

A baby who is too hot sleeps less well, is more restless, and can become dehydrated. It is therefore essential to address several factors: room ventilation, bedding, clothing, and the furniture itself.

1. Cool down the room without air conditioning

No need for air conditioning to keep the room cool. A few simple steps are enough:

Close the shutters and curtains during the day to block the sun's heat.
Ventilate early in the morning and in the eveningwhen temperatures drop again.
– Place a ventilateur in the room, but without directing it directly towards the baby.
- A damp cloth Placed in front of an open window, it can act as a natural air conditioner.

2. Adapt baby bedding for summer

During periods of intense heat, forget about thick sleeping bags and synthetic foam mattress toppers that retain heat.

The bed on the floor SONHO Mini allows you to sleep close to the ground to benefit from the coolness.

Instead, opt for:

- A lightweight cotton sheet rather than a cover.
- A thermo-regulating mattresspreferably made of natural fibers.
No crib bumper : in addition to not being recommended for safety, it reduces air circulation.

💡 Good to know: Floor beds have an unexpected advantage in hot weather: cool air naturally accumulates near the floor, creating a slightly cooler area than higher up.

Le Floor bed SONHO Mini JurababyMade of solid wood and equipped with a slatted base for better mattress ventilation, this bed combines this natural advantage with a soft and durable design. Ideal as soon as baby gains independence.

3. Choose a bed that promotes air circulation

The choice of bed plays a significant role in your child's thermal comfort. Wooden bars allow for better air circulation than solid panels. Solid wood, a naturally breathable material, does not retain heat like some plastics or particleboard.

Our solid wood beds have been designed to last and adapt to your child's growth, but they also offer this significant thermal advantage.

4. Dress baby properly at night

In summer, a short-sleeved cotton bodysuit Often that's enough. If the night is cooler, a light cotton onesie can be added. Absolutely avoid synthetic materials that retain heat.
Quick tip for parents: touch the back of your baby's neck to assess its temperature. It's more reliable than hands or feet, which can be cool even when the baby is hot.

5. Hydrate and monitor

– Offer regularly water or milk (depending on the baby's age), even at night.
– Warning signs to watch for: unusual restlessness, very hot and dry skin, sunken fontanelle, persistent crying. If in doubt, consult your pediatrician.

6. Consider the park for daytime naps
